Write Place Write Time Podcast

Write Place Write Time (WPWT) is a podcast about writing, organised by Federation University Australia as part of the Regional Writers Rise Festival.

Your hosts are Adelaide Sabre, Jake Maison and Lachlan Davidson, three writing students at Federation who have a passion for writing, reading and the creative process. We’re also not ashamed to admit that we’re massive sci-fi and fantasy nerds.

But WPWT is not about any particular genre, style or format. The podcast is about writing in all its forms, and we believe that everyone is a writer and has a story to tell…

Make that many stories.

Developed in conjunction with the first Regional Writers Rise Festival: Celebrating the Diverse Stories of Gippsland and Beyond, the podcast focuses on starting out as a writer and will tackle topics including the tension between art and commerce, the realities of the publishing world and the creative process. In particular, we’re interested in how these themes intersect with writers’ lived reality, including but not limited to experiences of neurodivergence, disability, sexuality and gender.

Episodes feature interviews with writers and creative professionals who will share their writing journeys and discuss the featured topics and themes of each episode. In line with the festival, the first season focuses on the Gippsland region of Victoria, but we will eventually expand our scope to cover the rest of Victoria and beyond.

Write Place Write Time is recorded at the Moe Library podcast studio. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Brayakaulung people of the Gunaikurnai Nation and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

We at WPWT would like to extend our gratitude to Moe Library for providing the studio space and a big thank you to Jess McIntosh for sharing her wisdom and providing expert guidance in the Library’s podcasting workshop program.

Episodes

Episode 3: Write What You WANT to Know

Guest: Jessica Obersby, former manager of Writers Victoria’s Writeability program and Federation University Masters student

In our neurospiciest episode yet, we explore writing with and about disability and the challenges of representation in writing. Whether you’re writing about your own experience or want to bring a bit of diversity to your characters, proceeding from a place of genuine curiosity and respect will not only help to ensure your prospective readers are treated fairly, but will make for better, more accurate writing. In our interview with writer and former manager of Writers Victoria’s Writeability program Jessica Obersby, we discuss how to navigate representation, as well as some of the programs and supports available. Jess also shares her own experience as a writer, and the subject of human-horse hybrids is addressed in exhaustive detail 🐴🥕😁🐎.

Episode 2: Just Start Writing

Guest: Jordyn Presley, festival mentor, editor and Federation University PhD student

In this episode, we explore writing opportunities, careers and publishing. We discuss how we come up with ideas, what inspires us, receiving feedback and our current ideas and writing projects. We also interview Jordyn Presley, a creative writing PhD student and one of the editors of Paper Road Magazine, about creating and finding creative opportunities. Jordyn will delve into her experiences with postgraduate learning, her publications, her part in creating Paper Road and her experience as both an editor and writer.

Episode 1: Getting Started

Guest: Dr Threasa Meads, festival coordinator and Federation University writing lecturer

In our first episode, we introduce ourselves and what WPWT is all about, as well as talking about our own experiences with writing, and some of our favourite authors and books. We also interview Dr Threasa Meads, coordinator of the Regional Writers Rise Festival, of which this podcast is a component. Recorded early in the festival’s development, this interview provides an overview of the thinking behind the event and its future vision.
